Hempseed Oil Bread

Hemp oil Bread

Fresh, warm hempseed oil bread served with Goodies & Grains Gourmet Original Dukkah, and their Chilli Dukkah and Hemp Food Tasmania hemp oil.

This delicious hempseed oil bread dough is also perfect for pizza bases and steamed buns! The hempseed oil imparts a slightly green tinge and adds a subtle nutty flavour. It’s great with both sweet and savoury toppings and spreads, and makes an interesting addition to platters when entertaining.

You can kneed this dough by hand, of course – but personally I opt for a food processor. Mine is almost identical to this newer Breville model, and has lasted about 6 years (so far). The food processor option is great because I find it no trouble to regularly whip up a double batch of dough on the weekend, which we then use for bread rolls, pizza bases and more. It has been a great investment because we also use it daily for smoothies and most vegetable processing. As the hempseed oil bread dough keeps well in the fridge for a couple of days, my teenage kids will just grab a portion and roll to make a quick, fresh pizza snack! (Note: dough may continue to expand while refrigerated).

Hempseed oil has a slightly nutty, slightly bitter taste – I often compare it to pine nuts! This hempseed oil bread is a more subtle way to experience the flavour with goodness of a perfectly balanced 3:1 ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 fatty acids. It also contains all 20 amino acids – including the 9 essential amino acids our body is unable to make on its own (amino acids are needed to build and maintain muscle tissue).

Hempseed oil is a healthy substitute for oil/butter/shortening in just about any baked goods. Avoid using it for frying at high temperature as it has a fairly low smoke-point.

Ingredients

  • 3 Cups Plain flour
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 3 tsp Dried yeast
  • 1 Cup Warm water
  • 1 tbsp Castor Sugar
  • 1/4 Cup Hemp Food Tasmania Hemp Oil

Instructions

  • Sift flour in to large mixing bowl or food processor, and add salt.
  • In a small mixing bowl add the yeast, sugar, warm water, and hemp seed oil.
  • Allow yeast mixture to stand until the yeast has foamed on the top (5-15 mins depending on room temperature).
  • Add liquid all at once to flour and set food processor to kneed function. Or mix with wooden spoon to combine and then turn out on to floured board and kneed for 5 minutes by hand. Dough should be smooth and bounce back to shape quickly when pressed with the finger-tip.
  • Place the dough in a large oiled bowl and place in a warm place to rise (approx. 30 mins).
  • When the dough has doubled in size, punch it down with one firm punch then kneed for a further 5 mins.
  • Place dough in to a loaf pan, or shape in to a loaf or rolls on a tray. Allow to stand in a warm place to rise again, for around 30 mins.
  • Place bread in a preheated fan forced oven at 170 degrees and bake until golden brown. *note: cooking time will vary depending on the shape and size of your loaf/rolls. A loaf may take around 20-30 mins and when cooked, will sound hallow when you tap on the top of it.
